He is an ecosystem ecologist who is interested in global change and human-dominated systems. His research explores the responses of biogeochemical cycling in soils to altered environmental regimes, with a focus on linking community structure and ecosystem functioning. He works at the intersection of ecological and social sciences to develop an integrated understanding of human ecosystems, with a special emphasis on the ecology of cities and arid systems undergoing multiple environmental changes.
