Geospatial Tools for the Everyday Graduate Student
02/26/2009 - 6:00pm
Location:
BSE 328Kristin Wisneski presents a hands-on geospatial training.
Graduate Forum is an informal venue for SNR grads to present their work. This Thursday's graduate forum is open to all - undergrads, faculty and staff welcome!
Note the changed location: BSE 328
Using the computers in BSE 328, we will run through an exploratory and hands-on training event that utilizes a variety of desktop and online mapping programs including ArcMap, Google Earth, Google Maps, and DNR Garmin. The training will simulate the experience a student may have in the data collection phase of their research. Data collected using a GPS receiver will be converted into various file formats (i.e. KML, SHP, etc...) using the DNR Garmin software. As KML, the data can enter the collaborative mapping world of Google Earth and Google Maps. This format offers a versitile and innovative way to store, visualize and share geographic information. In addition, as a collaborative tool, Google Maps can be worked on simultaneously by many users in many locations. This functionality can be a great way to integrate group data collection in a project that requires community involvement or outreach. Because in our academic environment, ArcMap is preferred over Google Maps because of its sophistication and analysis abilities, we will also run through the logistics of coverting KML into shapefile format.
